Character Name: Nathaniel Walek
Age: 41
Hometown: Originally from Oxford, England. Was temporarily residing in New York.
Current Location: Atlanta, Georgia
Bio: Nathaniel Walek's upbringing was like most other boys in Oxford who had doctors for parents. Both parents were strict disciplinarians who wanted their son to follow in their footsteps. Nathan, luckily, wanted to be just like his father, a reknowned surgeon in the UK, so convincing him that intellect was the key to success wasn't extremely difficult.
Being a quiet child, Nathan stayed to himself, preferring the quiet of his play room and the solitude of the library to loud, rambunctious playgrounds. He was shy and some what aloof even at an early age. He rarely raised his voice and he always did as he was told. His mother would sometimes joke with him by saying 'if she didn't see his books lying about the house, she'd forget that she had a child.' That's how quiet he was.
Throughout his studies Nathan excelled academically. Learning, as he would say, was a continuous process--never ending. He feared not knowing rather than knowing too much and would spend hours slaving over tomes, factual magazines and others books of interest. He breezed through school, skipping most of elementary. Perhaps that was not the best thing for a boy his age. Already increasingly unsociable, he found himself amongst students twice his age in his new school. Feeling more isolated than ever, he turned to books for comfort rather than idle interest. During his years in secondary school, he made only one friend, a boy by the name of Henry Garretson. He too was a social 'reject.' Although he wasn't as intelligent as Nathan was, they didn't need to discuss science to click. Their connection was immediate.
They graduated together and went on to room at Merton College where Nathan studied medicine. Professor Clines, his chemistry teacher, challenged him where others did not. He made him think outside of the box. He was taught to not rely heavily on what he read in books. He was forced to challenge what he knew, test what he did not know and discover things about science and himself that he never would have. When Nathan graduated from Merton, Clines was the one professor he personally sought out to thank. They still converse even now that Nathan has graduated.
After graduating from Merton, Nathan applied to medical school in the United States. HIs father encouraged him to do so. It was his way of getting the chick out of the nest. To make the transition from undergrad to med student in Massachusetts easier, Henry decided to tag along and pursue his love, acting, in Manhattan. After recieving his acceptance letter to medical school, they boarded a plane to the United States and never looked back. Although they were not together, they wrote each other when they could and visited each other when they had the time. Harvard med was another eye opening experience for Nathan, but he met adversity with poise. After four years he applied for surgical intern position in Manhattan. He was crest fallen when he wasn't immediately accepted, but after being wait listed, he was finally accepted. Five months later, Nathan moved to Manhattan.
After working tiredlessly to become a orthopedic surgeon, Nathan reached his goal. His parents were there to see him say his pledge. He was home sick after being away from all that he knew, so for the first three years he worked in a hospital in Oxford. Perhaps the only reason he moved back to the United States was to pursue love.
He was involved in the care of a young woman who had been sightseeing. She had taken a nasty fall. Nathan, still a young doctor, perhaps crossed the lines of affection with her, but he fell for her nonetheless. When she recovered, she spoke of returning home and Nathan, smitten with her, joined her. They loved fiercely for a year and neither of them would could have known that two months later, the day before he would propose, she would be struck and killed by a drunk driver in Manhattan. Nathan was devastated and heart broken. He was never quite himself after that. He buried her in the country and tried to return to his normal life, but he failed. Days turned into weeks and weeks into months. A year passed before he finally began to see the light. He'd been living in darkness for so long.
He would have gone back to the United Kingdom had the infection not begun to spread. Now traveling with a group of survivors, he is trying to make himself useful, but he feels that he's become more of a burden.
