No one alive can answer the question for sure, and anyone that may have known are now deceased. The true reason is one we will never know.
The infection broke out in the early summer of the year 2010 in Valencia, California. Over the course of several weeks, it grew from a class one outbreak to a class two outbreak, with over one hundred infected identified. From there, it only got worse, spreading rapidly until within months it took over the entire west coast. Then soon after, the entire western half of the country. The United States was doomed before anyone knew it.
The U.S. military discovered that certain individuals they rescued were in fact carriers of the Solanum virus, but were somehow immune. How did they know? One of the survivors they rescued had an open wound from a zombie that was several hours old, and he showed no symptoms of turning. He was immediately detained for questioning and testing. Not long after, the immune began popping up few and far in-between. The military learned quickly that it wasn't a freak coincidence, but a running trend. What made these people immune to the Solanum virus?
Hopelessly determined to find a cure through this discovery, these individuals were either rescued or kidnapped. They were taken to a makeshift base of operations in the desolate city of Tucson in southern Arizona. The base had been constructed next to the only remaining medical center left in the area, St. Joseph's Hospital. However, somehow - perhaps through the sloppy execution of necessarily strict policies - the infection spread inside the hospital. The building was immediately shut down and the military withdrew, migrating from their base to safer headquarters up north. So what happened to the remaining survivors? ...
